What is Telehealth? Physiotherapist, Darcy Meesen explains….

by | Apr 23, 2020

With all that’s going on in the world, more and more of our wonderful clients are either in quarantine or self isolating for the good of themselves and their families. In response to this, we at TSMC have developed an online consultation, called “Telehealth”. We want to make sure our amazing community are able to continue to have access to high quality healthcare despite their isolation so that they can remain active, healthy and happy over the coming months.

How does it work?

Just like a normal Physio, Osteo, Podiatry or Exercise Physiology appointment, you can book a time online or over the phone and specifically request an “online” consultation. From here we will book you in and send you an email with all you need to do prior to your appointment. (We’ve been preferring to use an app called zoom.us to complete the video consultations).

At the time of your appointment, your therapist will send you a link via text or email with a code to enter into the zoom.us app (you can use your phone or computer to do this). This will then connect your video through to us and our private consultation will begin.

What’s the difference between a normal consult and a Telehealth consult?

In essence, not much! We will start by taking a detailed history of your injury and develop a great understanding for what is going on. From there we will get you to demonstrate (through the camera) different movement patterns to better understand where your pain is and how it affects you through movement.

From this detail we can gather a very good clinical picture about what is likely causing your pain… which means we’re ready to get on with your treatment.

But how can you treat me through the computer?

The secret is we teach you all the skills to treat yourself at home- this will include self massage techniques, stretches and a specific exercise program aimed at restoring you back to your best. We will take our time here to go through these things with you. This will include a demonstration by us, then we will watch you do it and provide corrections to technique as needed.

After the appointment, we will even send you through your exercise program (in email or through an app called physiapp). We will also create a management plan with you so that we can establish a clear path towards returning to your goals!

If you need any equipment (i.e. resistance bands or spikey massage balls) to complete your rehab, we will even drop them at your door, so you can commence your recovery as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about this whole process, please contact us! We realise this is all new for many of you and we are more than happy to walk you through the whole process.
